It’s Never Too Late to Rehabilitate – A Prescription for Well-being

Regular physical activity is essential to good health and well-being but many people simply don’t make time for it.  Instead, they spend small fortunes on expensive supplements and foolish gimmicks, thinking that they can take the easy way out. But they are only fooling themselves. Gerontologist, Dr. Ronan Factora, says  “no pill is going to provide as many benefits as simple exercise.”  He points out that exercise is not only good for your body, it also benefits your brain by decreasing depression and anxiety as well as improving cognitive function.

Other benefits include:

  • Increased strength, flexibility, range of motion and endurance
  • Decreased joint pain, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and stroke
  • Improved weight control and emotional stability

According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and American Heart Association (AHA), some form of regular exercise is needed for good health. The HHS notification, Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, recommends:

  • At least 150 mins of moderate activity, or
  • At least 75 mins of vigorous aerobic activity, or
  • some combination of the two.
  • EACH WEEK!

Muscle-strengthening activities of moderate intensity, involving all major muscle groups, should also be performed at least 2 days per week. Additionally, if you are over 50, some balance training should be incorporated into your program.

And remember: It’s always advisable to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program, especially if you have risk factors for illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Some exercises are better than others; some can even be detrimental, so don’t take chances. Your physical therapist can help to determine which exercises are best for you.  So, call Town and Country Physical Therapy to schedule a quick and easy evaluation.IT’S FREE when you mention this posting.
