Best Outcomes After Joint Replacement Surgery

Total joint replacements − hip, knee, or shoulder − are highly effective operations for debilitating arthritis. Despite routine procedural success, however, many patients (up to 30%) go on to report dissatisfaction with their surgical results. If asked: “What outcomes are most important to you after undergoing a joint replacement,” they reply: 1) pain relief, 2) improved movement or function, and 3) realization of their expectations. Sadly, about 1/3 of all patients do NOT achieve such results to their satisfaction.

To get the best outcomes after joint replacement, here’s what YOU need to know and do.

Choose a Competent Surgeon

Ask your primary doctor, other healthcare providers, family, and friends for recommendations to guide your hunt for the best surgeon. On websites like Healthgrades.com, seek the credentials and certifications of potential candidates. (Certification tells you that the doctor has the necessary skills, training, and experience to provide the type of orthopedic care that you need.) You can also identify the surgeon’s medical school and training hospital, as well as their malpractice or disciplinary history on the internet. Generally, more orthopedic experience translates into better surgical results. So, ask perspective surgeons how many patients like you have they treated and how many similar procedures they have performed. What are their success and complication rates? What are YOUR specific surgical risks?

Consult a Local Physical Therapist

Physical therapists see patients before and after orthopedic operations. That’s what they do. They routinely evaluate surgical results and literally assess the quality, complications, improvements, and deficiencies of the surgery and the competence of the surgeon. They know who’s good and who’s bad. You would be wise to seek their recommendations before you plan orthopedic procedures and/or choose providers.

Research Hospital Quality

Consider the overall quality of the hospital or surgical center where you will have your operation. Patients at the best hospitals receive the best care, have fewer complications, and realize significantly better outcomes.

Perform Physical Therapy Before Your Surgery

If you have a joint replaced, you will require physical therapy as part of your post-op care. But why wait until then? For best “post-op” results, you should start physical therapy “pre-op;” that is, prior to surgery. Commonly called “prehab,” physical therapy before surgery is becoming more and more popular. It can reduce inflammation in the diseased joint, improve blood flow, strengthen muscles, and facilitate a greater range of motion. The healthier the joint is before surgery, the faster and fuller your recovery will be after surgery. Studies have shown that patients who properly stretch and strengthen relevant muscles around affected joints before a surgical procedure usually have better, faster, and fuller recoveries afterward.

Make a Commitment to Post-op Physical Therapy

After the operation, physical therapy is the key to a better recovery. It facilitates proper healing and helps many patients avoid or limit addictive drugs. It provides the means to recover faster and to regain maximum mobility and function. Moving is essential as soon as possible during recovery, but so is stretching, strengthening, and putting the new joint through a full range of motion.

With professional assistance in a safe environment, physical therapy helps patients to resume normal daily activity more quickly and completely. It helps seniors stay independent and even live longer. Additionally, physical activity has a positive effect on emotional and psychological health. YES!  Physical activity causes the release of magical substances called “endorphins” that help create a sense of well-being and positive mood…  an added benefit.

Remember: it is IMPORTANT to begin your program immediately after surgery and continue it at home until you achieve maximum success and satisfaction with your results.
